While there are many things to love about the holiday season, the pressure to find the perfect gift for everyone on your list is intense. There are many ways that you can make holiday shopping on a budget less stressful, and taking advantage of price matching is a good start. These policies are designed to encourage store loyalty by allowing you to buy everything you need in one store without missing out on deals offered by competing retailers. Best Buy’s Price Match Guarantee is similar to the price-matching programs offered by Wal-Mart and other stores, but there are some limitations to consider during the holiday season.
No Price Matches for the Big Shopping Days
If there is one day when you might want to price match to avoid running all over town, it’s Black Friday. You want to take advantage of all the deals, but you don’t want to fight the crowd in every store on your list. Unfortunately, you’ll have to do the price matching somewhere else because Best Buy includes the following line in their Price Match Guarantee policy:
“Our Price Match Guarantee does not cover…items for sale Thanksgiving Day through the Monday after Thanksgiving, whether offered by Best Buy or a competitor.”
This means two things for holiday shoppers:
- Best Buy will not match prices offered by any competitor on Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday or Cyber Monday.
- Best Buy will not match their own Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday or Cyber Monday deals after these special shopping days have passed. Get the deals while they last, and they often disappear fast.
How to Use the Price Match Guarantee for Holiday Savings
It is disappointing that Best Buy won’t price match on some of the biggest shopping days of the year, but there are still opportunities to take advantage of the Price Match Guarantee. Most retail stores will continue offering blowout prices through New Years Day, and Best Buy will match prices offered by “local retail competitors” and select online retailers before Thanksgiving Day and after Cyber Monday.
In order to qualify as a “local retail competitor,” a store must meet the following criteria:
- It’s located within a 25-mile radius of your local Best Buy store
- It’s authorized to sell brand new products in factory-sealed packaging with a warranty
The retailers located within close proximity to a Best Buy store will vary by location, so you must use these criteria when determining whether a store qualifies as a competitor. You may also use the Price Match Guarantee to secure prices offered through the following online retailers:
Amazon.com does offer steep discounts on electronic products throughout the holiday season. Keep in mind that you can pull up their deals on your smartphone while in your local Best Buy store and price match rather than waiting for Amazon to deliver those products. This is a good way to ensure that you have gifts in time for Christmas, but it’s dependent on your local Best Buy store having the items that you want in stock.
During the holiday season, you have to look at the small print in ads to see if a product is marked with a label similar to “Limited Quantities Available.” Many holiday deals come with those words because stores don’t want to honor those low prices after the holiday shopping rush is over. Unfortunately, this also means that some of the best deals offered by other stores won’t qualify for Best Buy price matching.
If you’re determined to visit just one store and score all of the deals that grab your interest, make sure to shop around and read about the price-matching policies for a variety of stores. You may find that price matching through Wal-Mart or another local retailer better fits your needs during this crazy time of year.
